Well, a very belated Happy New Year to everyone!

Fairly quiet start to the year. Chats with a couple of people who are interested in what we’re doing. One a Nigerian student who is very interested in the Mutual Home Ownership Society (MHOS) model pioneered by Lilac in Leeds. We were able to help him flesh out his understanding. He thinks the approach might be useful when he returns home after his studies.

Did more work on our draft pull-up banner (now up to version 7), got some useful feedback from a storytelling / artist friend, discussed it in group, and made changes. Now ready to print some A3 copies with questionnaire to get community feedback.

We attended a very interesting workshop hosted by the UK Cohousing Network (UKCN) at which a representative of Mole Architects spoke to a set of design tools they’ve created to help client groups work more effectively with architects and developers. The toolset is called buildgroup.uk. A website and a printed doc dedicated to the toolset are due out shortly. There are three components: a set of (physical) blocks to help people visualise the overall shape of the community; a set of layouts to help people customise their individual apartments / houses; and an organiser to help people work with architects and developers. In summary, the toolset covers stages one and two of the Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA’s) Plan of Work. It’s also expected to slot into Community Led Housing’s (CLH’s) Plan stage (stage 3 of 5).

We’re planning on improvements to our social media outreach – but are waiting on estimates from a representative of the ecococon (straw panel) building system before we push ahead with that outreach.

Cohousing West Midlands is (surprise) a cohousing project for the West Midlands! Cohousing is where everyone has their own front door, but there's also a community house for weekly shared meals and activities, and other shared spaces. More than a Housing Association, and less than a co-op!
